What to do if you have touched elemental mercury
The UK Government website suggests that if you have touched mercury through your skin or clothes, you must remove the clothing. Wash the affected skin with lukewarm water and soap for 10 to 15 minutes, and call 111 for medical advice. If symptoms of mercury poisoning begin to show, then you must call 999.
To minimise the possibility of contact during a spill, you must evacuate the area right away and call cleaning services to come and contain the spill. Do not try to clean it up yourself as you may be at risk of inhalation or touching it.
If you believe you may have ingested or inhaled toxic vapours, you must seek medical attention immediately due to the severity of mercury in your bloodstream.
