How does mercury affect our bodies?
All three forms of mercury present their own dangers and symptoms, but they share a common toxic trait. When mercury enters our body, the bloodstream absorbs it, which crosses the blood-brain barrier to cause neurological damage. What should you do if you have touched mercury?
Government sources indicate then if you touch mercury, you should immediately remove any soiled clothing and wash the affected skin. How to stay safe at work
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises that employers conduct a chemical spill risk assessment at least once a year. This is enforceable by law, and neglecting the safety of your workplace could lead to a fine and legal repercussions. You must have procedures enforced that will prevent spills and advise your workers on what to do during a dangerous incident. Ensure that your workers do the following to minimise mercury poisoning in the workplace:
- Have access to spill kits and PPE
- Wash at the end of a workday
- Wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking, or touching their face
- Use eye wash fountains or emergency showers if mercury touches the skin or clothes
- Ensure work clothes are disposed of if contaminated
- Label storage containers properly
- Monitor the air purity regularly
- Attend training, understand hazard information, know about emergency response procedures
