Exposure can cause a range of long-lasting health problems if not removed promptly.
People that are sensitive or allergic to mould and spores are particularly vulnerable. The severity of the health effects can depend on various factors, like the type of mould, the concentration of spores, the individual and the duration of exposure. The health effects of mould exposure can include:
- Allergic Reactions: Sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, skin rashes and throat irritation.
- Respiratory Symptoms: Mould exposure can worsen pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. Causes coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.
- Fungal Infections: People with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or those with HIV/AIDS, are at risk of fungal infections. These infections can be severe and may affect the lungs, skin or other organs.
- Irritation of the Eyes, Nose, and Throat: Mold spores and mycotoxins can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, leading to discomfort, redness and soreness.
- Headaches: Some individuals may experience headaches when exposed to mould.
- Fatigue: Prolonged mould exposure may result in general feelings of fatigue.
- Immune System Reactions: Can cause severe health effects when inhaled, ingested or in contact with the skin. Reactions include fever, joint pain and systemic illnesses in some cases.
