How does a domestic oil spill occur?
Some homes, especially in rural areas, are more likely to use their heating oil tanks to keep their homes warm. What should you do when oil spills?
If an oil spill occurs near you or your domestic heating oil tank starts leaking, you must first protect yourself. Ideally, if you are qualified and it is safe, you should try to contain the spill with absorbents like sand or cat litter. Otherwise, you must keep your distance and follow these steps:
- Avoid the area if you see or smell oil
- Do not touch the oil
- Wash any oil off your skin with warm and soapy water
- Remove any soiled clothing immediately
- Alert your local authorities to the spill and any locals nearby
- Contact 111 if you start to show short-term symptoms
- Call 999 or go to A&E if you develop severe symptoms
