Are pressure washers unsafe for brick?
Because bricks are porous materials, they require more gentle cleaning methods like our TORIK Brick Cleaning System, which acts as a steam cleaner to restore brick. If you decide to use a pressure washer on a brick surface, the brick will absorb the water easily and could lead to extensive damage.
Pressure washers remove the natural waterproofing elements of brickwork, and could even dent the brickwork, leaving holes and chipping at the brick. The high pressure combined with water allows for excessive water absorption and potential frost damage.
How waterproofing your brick increases its lifespan
When your exterior brickwork is exposed to the elements like excessive rainfall regularly, it will absorb some of that rainwater over time and contain it. This makes it vulnerable to the freeze-thaw effect when the seasons change and unwelcome growths like mould and mildew.
There are several ways to implement waterproofing on brick surfaces, varying in costs and methods in how it prevents water from entering the bricks.
Painting waterproofing
This method of waterproofing allows the homeowner to have some freedom to colour the brick walls to match a neighbourhood's aesthetic and protect against water. These masonry paints are tough and applicable to cement renders and pebble dashes.
Silicone waterproofing
This is one of the best waterproofing methods available, providing protection against extreme weather like snow, frost, and rain. Silicone waterproofing also improves a building’s insulation, reducing energy bills and increasing its efficiency.
Damp-proof membrane
Exterior membranes come in sheets made from various materials, but they appear gummy or glue-like in their texture. It is an excellent method to prevent rising damp and is applied to external brick walls that contain a basement.
Plaster waterproofing
Once a brick surface has finished building, a cement-sand mortar is applied to the surface, protecting the underlying brick. It is easy to apply on its own and is one of the less expensive methods of waterproofing.

Can you clean brick surfaces yourself?

Specific damage like frost and graffiti cannot disappear with simple cleaning methods, requiring specialist processes. However, for general maintenance and cleaning, you can do this safely if the brick is at eye level.
According to Royal Stone Care, the best way to clean brick is to use a hard bristle brush with some warm soapy water. This is the safest way to clean brick as it is not corrosive or abrasive to the brick or your skin. Although, you should wear gloves as you do this.
