How thirdhand e-cigarette smoke is dangerous
According to a study conducted in 2015, e-cigarettes that contain different nicotine concentrations can result in significant chemical residue on surfaces, even after 100 puffs.
Three out of four experiments demonstrated an increase in the substance, suggesting the presence of thirdhand exposure risk to nicotine.
Subsequent studies have also confirmed that e-cigarettes and vaping devices produce thirdhand smoke, much like conventional cigarettes.
Research conducted in 2020 revealed that thirdhand exposure to vape smoke is dangerous for vulnerable groups such as children, expectant mothers, and people with asthma.
Why is thirdhand smoke dangerous to children?
Infants and young children can be exposed to thirdhand smoke contaminants in various ways that some may not realise. This contamination starts as early as during the pregnancy stages when these toxins can pass through the placenta to the baby.
Breastmilk also transfers these chemicals to the baby or food that has been in contact with smoke residues. Newborn infants are at risk of picking up these contaminants by being touched or held by smokers, who are carrying smoke residue on their clothes, hair, and skin.
When your child begins to move and crawl, they learn by touching and tasting. This means that thirdhand smoke in the environment will be touched and ingested often.
