Professional Mercury Spillage Cleaning

We offer professional mercury spillage cleaning services for customers in the Chatham area of Medway.

We are Chatham’s leading experts for mercury spillage cleaning solutions.

Elemental mercury is the main form of spill that will occur. This is due to its liquid form and the toxicity it could cause when it spills at room temperature. These incidents are more likely to happen in a workplace such as a warehouse or a factory, so you must be fully aware of any hazards and follow safety regulations.

If a spill arises, ICE Cleaning's expert specialists can be on-site within a matter of hours in an emergency. Our modern technology and industrial-grade solutions will contain, clean, and disinfect a contaminated area where a chemical spill has happened.

When our technicians arrive on-site to contain a spill, they will wear appropriate PPE and have industry-leading tools. Professional and friendly communication is important to us, and we shall remain transparent throughout the process.

Before our cleaners begin, they must test the area to determine the levels of mercury present. They will proceed to contain the spill and begin the delicate process of mercury removal and decontaminating the area. Upon completion, they must carry out a final test to ensure the environment is safe to occupy again.

Where does mercury come from?

Although mercury is a rare element, it plays a role in our lives frequently. It is found in the Earth's crust, naturally produced in cinnabar and livingstonite ores. The largest mercury mining production takes place in countries like China and Kyrgyzstan.

Until the mid-1900s, it was used prominently before the toxic properties of the element came to light. Since then, its usage in everyday products has slowed significantly.

What are the dangers of mercury exposure?

We encounter mercury naturally throughout our lifetimes; however, these low-level exposures usually cause no harm. But, if an individual is exposed to high levels of mercury, there are many lethal consequences. The effects can be severe depending on a range of factors:

  • The exposure levels
  • The type of mercury
  • The age and health status of the individual
  • The interaction with mercury — ingested, inhaled, or touched
  • The duration of the exposure

Mercury comes in three forms, the most lethal being methylmercury and elemental mercury, which is the most well-known form. Elemental mercury, also known as quicksilver, is a shiny liquid that evaporates at room temperature when spilt. The effects of exposure to either form of mercury can include:

  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Nervous system damage
  • Digestive damage
  • Immune system damage
  • Organ damage

We cover all areas in the Medway area of Kent, including:

  • Brompton
  • Cuxton
  • Gillingham
  • Halling
  • Hempstead
  • Rochester
  • Rainham
  • Strood
  • Upnor

What should you do when mercury spills

When mercury spills, you must contact professional cleaners as soon as possible to clean the spill for you. If you have mercury spill kits on-site, you may be qualified to use these to contain the spill with PPE, but do not try to clean it up yourself.

You must follow these steps in the meantime while you wait for technicians to arrive:

Alert the area

Raise the alarm in the event of a spill so everyone can evacuate immediately to protect themselves. You should barricade the area if possible and place warning signs where appropriate.

Wear PPE

If you must re-enter the area or use a mercury spill kit to contain it, you must only do so with a face mask and gloves to keep contact to a minimum.

Ventilate the area

Open any doors or windows with access to the outside so that the vapours may leave the area. Close all doors that lead to other rooms to minimise the spread of toxic fumes.

Do not try to clean it

If you have used a mercury spill kit to contain it, then this is where you should stop interacting with the mercury. Evacuate immediately, and do not try to clean the spill yourself with any equipment or solutions. Doing this could only exacerbate the effects and stain the area where the spill occurred.
