Mould in cars is a frustrating issue to deal with, and may leave you wondering how it occurred. The spores are risky to your health and to your car, so quick action is required in the event of mould growth.

At ICE Cleaning, we provide mould remediation across the UK. We follow strict health and safety practices throughout the clean to protect everyone's health. Customer satisfaction is our top priority.

Keep reading to discover how to prevent mould from forming in your vehicle.

What are the dangers associated with mould?

Mould spores can be toxic and cause a variety of health issues. This includes:

  • Nausea
  • Skin irritation
  • Lung damage
  • Dizziness

Those with existing conditions, such as asthma, should be particularly careful around mould. This is also applicable to children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Mould growth can result in structural damage to your home. In the process of decomposing organic matter, you may find that wallpaper or other surfaces become damaged by the fungus.

It could even ruin your prized possessions if the growth is near furniture or in places like your wardrobe. This will be costly to repair, and something you don't want to encounter.

Be careful with eating or drinking

Eating and drinking in the car can be a recipe for disaster. Spilt food and crumbs become mouldy over time, and will be difficult to get rid of from your vehicle.

Knocking over liquid in a car can create a damp condition, something which mould thrives in. Be careful with drinks in the car, making sure you store them safely when not in use.

In some situations, it might be easier to refrain from eating or drinking altogether. However, this may not be an option for longer car journeys, or something that is suitable for everyone.

Air out your car if a drink has been spilled to dry the affected area. Take cushions and carpets out of the car if possible to dry them. Make a point to thoroughly vacuum every time you wash your car, using the cord extensions to access hard-to-reach areas.

Regularly clean your car

Keeping to a good cleaning routine helps you prevent mould growth. Wipe down frequently used touchpoints and windows to reduce moisture build-up.

Cleaning your car will help remove excess food and crumbs and create a healthier atmosphere in the vehicle. Other people aren't going to want to ride in your car if it is uncomfortable and dirty.

Ensure you clean the outside consistently as well. If you don't have the time, opt for a professional car clean, where a deep clean will be carried out.

Another safety tip would be not to smoke in your car. Take a look at our vehicle odour neutralisation treatment to find out how we can help you get rid of unpleasant smells.

Use your temperature control settings

To reduce the moisture in your car, use your heater to bring the temperature up. This is especially handy in winter, when condensation is often thick on car windows from the cold weather.

Also use your air conditioning settings. This will remove moisture from the air and control the temperature within the vehicle.

Should you suspect you have mould, contact mould cleaners. At ICE Cleaning, we are Dewpoint accredited, a leading provider of training in mould removal. Wherever you're situated across the country, we've got you covered.

Fix any water damage

Make sure you fix any water damage in the vehicle quickly, as mould can quickly take root.

The culprit could be an issue with your sunroof. You will need to get the this fixed if this is the issue and holes sealed to prevent water from seeping in.

When there's a lot of water pooling around your feet, this could be an indication that there is a problem with your door membrane. Take your car to a mechanic to fix this before it gets worse.

If you experience water damage in your garage that is also impacting your car, this will need to be fixed too. Call in the experts, such as us at ICE Cleaning, to dry out the area and perform a deep decontamination and sanitisation.

Have a read of our blog on how to prevent flooding in garages for more information on this subject.
