Improve Safety On Campus For Your University Students

Socially distancing whilst wearing a face mask

It has been an incredibly tough year for university students across the UK.

Not only have their lectures and revision sessions moved online, but they’ve also been expected to continue with assessment methods as usual, albeit with limited support.

In this time of uncertainty, universities should do all that they can to provide a safe environment for students – and teachers – still living and working on campus.

Informative signs

Clear signs are the way forward when it comes to preventing the spread of the virus.

If you’d like your students to act in a certain way, it’s crucial to convey it. We’d recommend placing visual cues on building entrances and in busy areas, such as corridors.

The latest government restrictions state that university students should wear face masks and abide by social distancing rules where possible.

Here are some examples of suitable signs:

Please wear a face mask Please practice social distancing

Hygiene stations

In order to establish the importance of personal hygiene, hygiene stations should be positioned around the building, particularly near entrances, restrooms and canteens.

The presence of hand sanitiser will promote regular hand washing among students, minimising the risk of germs spreading.

Limited capacity

Another great way to reduce the risk is to limit capacity to 25%.

Libraries, common rooms and study spaces are high-risk environments due to their busy nature. By limiting capacity in these areas, you can reduce the amount of face-to-face contact and implement social distancing measures.

For extra caution, consider making it essential for students to scan an NHS app barcode upon entry. This will allow you to track your students in the event of a confirmed case of the virus.

Ventilation

According to HSE, good ventilation reduces the concentration of the virus in the air, which minimises the risk of airborne transmission.

The more people occupying a poorly ventilated area, the greater the risk of transmission. This is why capacity restrictions are necessary in indoor spaces.

In some cases, natural ventilation may be possible. Where possible, you should open windows and doors for regular intervals throughout the day. However, do not prop open fire exits.

If natural ventilation is not an option, you should install air conditioning. Air conditioning units work by mechanically recirculating fresh air, providing a cleaner atmosphere.

Decontamination

For ultimate safety, regular deep cleaning is required. We’d advise hiring a professional cleaning company to complete a full decontamination service at least once a month.

Here at ICE Cleaning, we offer a comprehensive coronavirus decontamination service for schools, colleges and universities across the UK.

With access to industry-leading solutions proven to be up to 4 times more effective than traditional cleaning methods, we guarantee protection for up to 28 days. For universities, we’d recommend repeating the service every 14 days.

Our decontamination process is quick, reliable and effective. The solution instantly kills all traces of the virus from the atmosphere and creates a protective blanket on solid surfaces.
