Dark mould spots on a white wall  CONTENTS

On average, we spend one third of our lives asleep. If there happens to be mould in your bedroom, this means you will be regularly exposed to it for long periods of time.

Here at ICE Cleaning, we can make your home a safe space, again, with our mould remediation services. Our Dewpoint-accredited technicians can remove all the spores on the surfaces and in the air in your property, and significantly improve the air quality.

Keep reading to find out why you must have mould in your bedroom removed as soon as possible.

What causes mould?

Mould is fungi that grows in moist environments and is usually found in parts of the home where there is damp, humidity, and poor ventilation. It can grow on nearly any surface including organic materials like paper and wood, and organic residue (i.e., dust) that forms on non-organic materials.

The bedroom contains plenty of these materials, such as bedding, wooden furniture and windowsills, clothing, and curtains so mould could quickly grow and spread there.

As some of these materials are porous, the mould can grow deep into the surface and is very difficult to remove without specialist products and equipment.

There are also lots of moisture and humidity sources in the bedroom, such as windowsills where condensation tends to form, so it can contain the optimal conditions for it to grow.

Airflow tends to be poor in and around big pieces of furniture, too, like inside wardrobes and behind chests of drawers. Condensation and dampness can quickly build up and mould may grow undetected.

The dangers of mould

Mould produces allergens, irritants, and sometimes toxins. When ingested, touched, or inhaled, they can trigger health problems such as allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory issues.

Some groups like young children, elderly people, and people with pre-existing conditions are especially vulnerable to mould exposure. They might experience more severe symptoms, such as a fever or lung infections.

Mould in the bedroom can be especially harmful as we spend a lot of time in them and are much more likely to come in contact with the spores. For example, if mould is on your bedding or growing on your clothes, you will regularly be touching it.

Should you spot any mould in your bedroom, you must have it removed immediately to protect your health and stop it spreading elsewhere in your home.

What are the signs of mould?

  • There are green, black, or white stains, smudges, spots, and patches of fuzz growing on your possessions and surfaces in your property
  • You have noticed a musty, damp smell – this is caused by the volatile organic compounds mould produces during its lifecycle
  • Your allergies and asthma are flaring up, for example, you are experiencing a runny nose, cough, sneezing, or skin rashes for no apparent reason

Mould can grow behind and inside furniture so make sure you check these areas for any of these signs of it.

How to get rid of mould

There are lots of products that claim to successfully kill mould, but it is recommended you bring in professional cleaners to tackle the problem for you.

They will have the personal protective equipment, specialist cleaning products, and equipment to remove all traces of the mould in your property quickly and safely. Our technicians will also be able to diagnose the root cause of the mould and advise on how to stop it coming back.

How to prevent mould in the bedroom

There are lots of ways to reduce the chances of mould growing in your property, such as keeping humidity below 50% with a dehumidifier. But there are some ways you can tackle the causes of mould in the bedroom specifically.

  • Move furniture away from the wall
  • Create space between the clothing and possessions in your wardrobe to enable airflow
  • Don’t leave clothes and bedding in piles for long periods of time
  • Dry any spills on your mattress and carpet as soon as possible (within 48 hours)
  • Ventilate the room by regularly opening windows to ensure humidity does not build up and condensation does not occur
